"Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom".  Psalms 90:12 NIV
..
.
Commentary:
.
Life gets so full and hectic that we often take our existence for granted and forget just how precious life is.   We allow stress and the little things that confront us to steal our peace and we begin to wonder why we aren't happy.   Maybe someone says something to upset us or something at work doesn't go quite the way we think it should, or maybe someone is driving too slowly as we hurry to get to our destination.   All of these things can cause us to lose focus on what is really important in the big scheme of things.  Life is a gift, and if we focus on what's wrong in our lives, we will miss all the beauty that God has given us, and the wonder that life itself has to offer.
.
God has given us so many blessings, things to fill our lives with joy, and our hearts with pleasure...  family, friends, people who encourage us and lift us up... all the beautiful sights and sounds of nature, a bird singing, a flower blooming.   God has given us so much.  The world is full of His glory, and all we have to do is look, to see His handiwork.  His love is all around us.  It's in the moon, the stars, the ocean waves, and a baby's cry.  Everywhere I look, God IS.  Yet, sometimes in the midst of it all, things of life get in the way and we forget.  We forget the magic we felt the first time we saw a firefly light up a 4th of July night, the wonder of the Virgin birth as the lights adorn the streets of Christmas, and the value of a moment spent to brighten someone else's day, just by letting them know we care.
.
Christmas is upon us and as we celebrate the most precious gift of all, Jesus Christ, let us also celebrate the other gifts in our life, least of which is life itself.  Don't let the beauty of life pass you by.  Never miss an opportunity to tell those you love how you feel about them, and never let them forget their worth.   Life has gotten so fast, and sometimes it's hard to remember a time when things were quiet and not so hectic.  Yet, regardless of the chaotic lifestyles we lead, God can restore peace to our hearts and give us that calm in the midst of the storm.  Socrates once said, "One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life.  That word is love."  God and love are the two most powerful forces in the universe; and, when God is at the center of that love, we have the perfect recipe for peace.
.
We are each allotted a certain amount of time to enjoy the beauty of the earth and the blessings God has given us.  Don't misuse your time on earth.  Don't waste one precious moment.  David asked God "Teach us to number our days", or rather to teach us to value every moment we are given.   I pray that each and every one of us will keep our lives in proper perspective, and I pray that God will grant us the wisdom to use and enjoy each day to the fullest.   As we do, we will draw closer to God and He will bestow upon us the full blessing that He has for us, each and every day.
.
.
Meditation:
.
Father we thank you for the life.  Teach us wisdom Lord, to keep our lives in proper perspective and to value each moment we are given.  Let us focus on our blessings rather than on the things that disrupt our days and may we never forget what a precious gift you have given us.  May we always find our comfort in you, and may we find joy in the little things, taking nothing for granted.  Thank you Father for the gift of Your Son, Jesus, and when the Christmas season is over, may the peace and love of the holiday carry forward throughout the coming year.  In Jesus Name I pray.  Amen.

The Candy Cane

Look at the Candy Cane

What do you see?

Stripes that are red

Like the blood shed for me

White is for my Saviour

Who's sinless and pure!

"J" is for Jesus, My Lord, that's for sure!

Turn it around

And a staff you will see

Jesus my Shepherd

Was born for Me!

Many years ago, a candy maker wanted to make a candy at Christmas time that would serve as a witness to his Christian faith.  He wanted to incorporate several symbols for the birth, ministry and death of Jesus.  He began with a stick of pure white hard candy; white to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus; hard to symbolize the solid rock, the foundation of the Church; firmness to represent the promise of God.  The candy maker made the candy in the form of a "J" to represent the name of Jesus, who came to earth as our Saviour.  He thought it could also represent the staff of the Good Shepherd, with which he reached down into the ditches of the world to lift out the fallen lambs who, like all sheep, have gone astray.

.

Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes.  He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received, by which we are healed.  The large red stripe was foar the blood shed by Christ on the cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life. Unfortunately, the candy became known as a candy cane - a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time.  But the true meaning is still there for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.
